A recent study conducted in Taiwan has shown promising results for intra-hippocampal transplantation of human umbilical mesenchymal stem cells (HUMSC) derived from Wharton’s jelly being used as therapy for epilepsy. Three groups of Sprague-Dawley rats were used in the study; one, a control group, was comprised of normal rats given PBS only. The second group were given pilocarpine to induce epileptic seizures with PBS injected into the hippocampus, while the third group was given pilocarpine to induce epilepsy and HUMSC transplants.

Results showed that the dorsal hippocampi of the second group (induced status epilepticus, no HUMSC) were smaller in volume than those of the first group (normal) and third group (induced SE, HUMSC transplantation). The group of SE rats that received HUMSC transplants experienced significantly decreased seizures compared to the group of SE rats that did not. The results “demonstrate the therapeutic benefits of HUMSC transplantation for the development of epilepsy, which are likely due to the ability of the cells to produce neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory cytokines” according to the abstract of the study.

The results of this study reveal a promising therapeutic possibility for epilepsy in humans in the future.
