Nerve pain is not only a painful nuisance, but something that can greatly reduce the quality of life for those who suffer from it. Treatments utilizing stem cells found in umbilical cord tissue and cord blood has shown potential for dealing with nerve pain, which is one of the many cord tissue benefits. There are many practical uses for stem cells collected through umbilical cord tissue banking; treating nerve pain is just the tip of the iceberg.

A recent study from Duke University, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, revealed some important information when it comes to using stem cells collected through umbilical cord blood banking and cord tissue banking to treat nerve pain. For this study, the medical team injected mice with bone marrow stromal cells, which are a kind of stem cell taken from bone marrow. These are different than stem cells collected through umbilical cord blood banking or taken from umbilical cord tisssue, but they can still be beneficial. The Duke Press release that the Journal of Clinical Investigation published indicated that prior research had shown that bone marrow stromal cells possess an array of healing factors, making them successful in relieving pain causes by stroke, heart damage, and inflammatory bowel disease.

The mice that were injected carried nerve damage and the stromal cells (which are different from cells collected by family cord blood services) soon infused with the spinal cord fluid of the mice. The results showed that these treated mice were much less sensitive to the pain caused by nerve damage, as opposed to untreated mice. Continued observation showed that the mice were relieved of their pain for four to five weeks, which astonished researches, who reported that they expected the pain relief to last a few hours, perhaps a few days at most.

This is similar to the way family cord banking is astonishing families who find that it can be used to treat more than 80 diseases. Truly, there are many positive factors concerning umbilical cord tissue banking. Cord tissue benefits may include the treatment of chronic nerve pain in the future, which is why it is a good idea to choose one of the family cord banking services during your stages of pregnancy, as cord blood and cord tissue banking benefits cannot be capitalized on if you do not collect your child’s stem cells that are found in cord blood and tissue at birth.
