1. Cord blood can treat or cure more than 80 diseases and disorders.
Cord blood holds potentially life-saving healing power. Stem cells from cord blood are used to treat a great number of diseases including leukemia, lymphoma, autoimmune diseases, anemia and more.
Cord blood treatments continue to evolve and become more prominent with doctors increasingly turning to it as an alternative to bone marrow stem cells. With many diseases, cord blood has become the standard, preferred treatment
2. Banking provides a unique, one-time opportunity to protect your child long term.
Parents have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to give their child the gift of a heathy future. The opportunity to collect your baby’s cord blood is short – it must be done in the few minutes following birth or they will be gone for good. Banking your baby’s cord blood is one of the best decisions a parent can make for a child.
3. Siblings and parents can possibly benefit from cord blood.
The stem cells found in cord blood are much easier to match to a recipient because they do not have to be an exact match the way bone marrow must. Blood cells have 6 HLA markers and for bone marrow to be considered for a recipient, all 6 markers must match. With cord blood, only 4 of the 6 markers must be the same, to be considered a match. Because siblings already have a 1-in-4 chance of being an exact 6-out-of-6 match, the odds are increased that they will at least be a partial match. Parents also have a chance to be a match to a baby’s cord blood.
This all means that should a family member need a stem cell transplant, they have an increased chance of finding a successful match when a sibling or child’s blood has been banked.
Also, depending on the disease, disorder or injury being treated, sometimes not using one’s own blood is preferred.
4. The future of stem cell research is exciting.
Medical breakthroughs and new discoveries with cord blood are happening all the time. Cord blood stem cells offer much therapeutic power in currently approved therapies, but its potential for future treatments, is even more exciting. New treatments and therapies are being studied in research and clinical trials to test cord blood’s effect on many other medical conditions including autism, heart disease, brain injury, hearing loss and blindness, and many more.
