Dr. Vliegenthart is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon and Founding Member of the medical staff of First Choice Medical Group of Orthopedic Surgeons and Neurology physicians in Melbourne, Florida. He completed his Residency in Orthopedic Surgery and Fellowship specialty training in Hand and Microsurgery at Cook County Hospital Trauma Center in Chicago, Illinois where he served as Chief Resident, prior to beginning private practice in Florida from 1985 to the present. Dr. Vliegenthart is one of the visionary pioneers in minimally invasive and microsurgery of the Spine which is now the cutting edge technique used by the most advanced Spinal Surgeons around the world. He received special permission from the FDA to perform the experimental surgery which led to the final development and FDA approval of the Pedicle Screw, now used universally around the world for reconstruction of the human spinal column in cases of severe degenerative disease or spinal trauma. He was elected by his peers to Fellowship in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Dr. Vliegenthart has taught advanced techniques in Surgical Reconstruction of the Adult Spine around the world. He served a 5 year appointment by President George W. Bush from 2004-2009 as a member of the Medicare Program Oversight Committee. In addition to his clinical practice, he served for 7 years as the Medical Director at Hoveround Power Mobility Corporation on the team that developed, manufactured and distributed some of the most innovative power mobility devices available in the world to this day. Dr. Vliegenthart has served as a Physician Consultant and Speaker for Stemcyte Corporation with extensive knowledge, study and experience in the application of advancing Stem Cell Science in the field of Regenerative Medicine, including the harvest, processing, storage and ultimately transplants of umbilical cord blood units, in accordance with FDA licensing standards which are now in place in the United States. He also is experienced in continuing to develop the equipment and clinical standards, for harvest of autologous marrow based stem cells and re-implantations of these cells for repair of injured or degenerative human joints and other musculoskeletal tissues.

Dr. Vliegenthart currently practices in Melbourne, Florida in Non-Operative Orthopedics and Interventional Pain Management. He continually interfaces with other practicing Physicians and Surgeons around the world with a constant goal of advancing the science of Stem Cell based Regenerative Therapeutic techniques as the research and clinical experience progresses.
