When a mother decides during her stages of pregnancy to collect and store her child’s cord blood through a private family umbilical cord blood banking service such as CariCord, this decision can have far-reaching effects. Cord blood is currently used to treat more than 80 diseases effectively, and stem cell research is continually underway to find more practical uses for cord blood.

Umbilical cord blood is rich in stem cells, which are non-controversial when used to treat patients in need of cancer, leukemia, or anemia treatment. A recent study utilized these cells, in an attempt to improve the neurodegeneration of the femoral nerve in a diabetic foot ulceration. Neuropathy is observed in 50% of diabetic patients with diabetic foot, which is why human cord blood cells could be of great benefit in femoral nerve neuropathy. This study was performed on lab rats, but has not yet been tested on humans.

The lab rats were given a single administration of streptozotocin and empyrosis on the dorsal hind foot. After the treatments were completed, the results showed that serum NGF was increased to a higher positive rate of NF-200. Continued clinical trials will likely be ongoing to determine the viability of this method of treatment in human patients. However, the results as of the time of this report are shown as positive.

Stem cell research utilizing cord blood is ever-increasing, which means that cord blood could be used for treatments in the future that we are completely unaware of today.
